If you have ever run a 92mm Vantec Tornado case fan, you would realize that 56.4dBa is extremely LOUD. The fact of the matter is, you don?t need your fans at full speed when the computer is idle. Cobalt3 was kind enough to let us take a look at their new Pyramid II fan silencer. Beginning with the construction, the first thing we noticed was the clear shell. From the pictures on the box, and their website, we came to the conclusion that the LED inside will be able to light up the entire unit this way, thus making the fan silencer not only a noise reducer but a case mod. The next step was to make sure that the fan we were testing would be able to run on such a small device. The 92mm Vantec Tornado is one of the most powerful fans on the market right now, consuming a LOT of power- 1.0 amps. From the instruction manual on the Pyramid II, this unit can handle up to 2.0 amps?PLENTY.

After plugging in the unit to the power supply, we were not too impressed with the amount of light given off. We expected a bright pyramid of light, but instead ? very little light was given off. If the LED was placed ABOVE the pcb rather than below, maybe we could have seen the results expected. Next thing was to plug the fan in. We were amazed with the small amount of noise. We decided to test the thermal sensor on the top of the Pyramid II by simply placing our finger over it to create a heated environment in order to simulate case temp. changes. Indeed, the Pyramid II quickly sped up the fan?s RPM as a reaction to the gain in temperature.

In order to place the fan silencer in a ?selected? area of your case, Cobalt3 has placed a small sticky pad on the bottom of the pyramid to stick it to almost anything. Before sticking it however, they have provided a alcohol swab to clean the surface before applying to ensure maximum strength.

The Pyramid II has a unique design, but could use some more work on the LED placement. Other than that, the Pyramid II performed to our standards. It was quick to respond with temperature changed by slowing and speeding the fan RPM on our Volcano 92mm fan. The Cobalt3 Pyramid II runs for about $30.00, which is kind of a steep price for what you receive.
